I absolutely LOVE teaching first grade! My students are so adorable and at that age, they’re like little sponges that soak up just about everything you teach them. Many times, their questions are super random and adorable, too!

i-heart-first-gradeIt takes A LOT of energy and enthusiasm to keep up with my first graders though, especially in the afternoon. I’m pretty powered up in the morning from my coffee, but in the afternoon, I sometimes wish I had a pick me up to get me through to the end of the day. We have a very long stretch from lunch to dismissal and I sometimes feel like I start to “lose my enthuse” when I start to get hungry!

SNICKERS-personality-barsHave you seen these adorable SNICKERS® bars at Walmart yet? They’re in the check out aisle and each one has a different “personality” on the wrapper.

SNICKERS-personality-bars-checkout-aisleSome of the labels are pretty funny. I couldn’t decide which one described me best when I get hungry so I bought them all! I’m pretty sure I’m a “Drama Mama” at all times though, not just when I”m hangry! I took them to my classrom to stock up my desk so when it’s hungry o’ clock, I can sneak bites when my students aren’t looking! Shhh, just don’t tell them. Every SNICKERS® is packed with roasted peanuts, nougat, caramel and milk chocolate and they hit the spot every time.

SNICKERS-Drama-MamaI also decided to spread the love to the other teachers on my grade level because there’s no way I’m the only one experiencing those mid-afternoon pangs of hunger and bouts of energy loss. I put together some “Teacher Emergency Jars” to bring to work and surprise them with.

SNICKERS-teacher-survival-kitHere’s what you’ll need to make your own “Teacher Emergency Jars“:

  • SNICKERS® bars (about 5-7 regular size bars fit in each Mason Jar)
  • 1 Mason jar for each kit you plan to make. I found a super cute one with a brightly colored lid.
  • Decorative ribbon, burlap, or even tulle of your choice. I went with some blue tulle for mine.
  • tape or washi tape
  • “Teacher Emergency Jar” printable (Download yours for FREE by clicking on the image below.) You could also use a handwritten label.teacher-emergency-jar-printable-trio (1)

These are very simple to put together. Here’s how to assemble yours:

  1. Remove the lid from Mason Jar and fill with the SNICKERS® bars.
  2. Print out my printable I printed mine out on cardstock because it’s a little sturdier. You can also make your own, or even hand write something to stick on the jar. Use either tape on the back of it or a couple pieces of washi tape to stick it on the front of the Mason Jar. Don’t worry about the washi tape not looking perfect. It’s supposed to look sporadically placed.
  3. Replace the lid and close up the jar.
  4. Tie some ribbon or tulle around the top of the jar.
  5. Give to those special teachers in your life.

assembling-teacher-emergency-jarI guarantee that any teacher who receives one of these will be appreciate of your thoughtfulness, especially because it includes SNICKERS®!

So who are YOU when you’re hungry? Take the super fun SNICKERS® quiz below to see who you are when you’re hungry. (I took it and got “Drama Mama”! No surprise, right? )

The Day My Daughter Taught Me the Word “HANGRY” (Because I Was Acting That Way!) SNICKERS® Saved the Day!

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #WhenImHungry #CollectiveBias

the-day

As a mom, I pride myself on being a very kind, loving, patient, and understanding mom. I love the relationship I have with my daughter and the fact that most of the time we see eye to eye.  I’m usually sleep deprived because I try to do too much. I’m always on the go and I feel like I walk around with an invisible to-do list above my head at all times. That’s just called “being a mom”, right?

It’s part of my regular daily routine to pick up my daughter from school at 3 p.m. On most days, I rush her off to one of her sports practices immediately after school. I remember this one particular day recently when I had a total “supermom fail”! I was acting a little short with my daughter. I’d even say I was being snappy. I don’t know what it was but everything was just irritating me that day. She actually stopped, looked directly at me, and asked, “Mommy, are you HANGRY or something?”

hangry-frameI wasn’t sure what that even meant! When I asked her to explain she replied, “You already know what HANGRY is! It’s when you’re acting angry because you’re so hungry! I think Daddy gets it a lot!‘ I almost spit out my water and started laughing at that part! We both ended up giggling about it together. The funny thing is that 1) I was actually “HANGRY” because I had skipped lunch that day at work and 2) My 9 year old had just taught me a new word!

hangryI would never want my daughter to mistake my being a little stressed out for me being upset with her! This is why for me,  it was a total “mom fail”! My attitude was quickly turned around that day after we stopped by Walmart and found these amazing SNICKERS®! They had SNICKERS® Almond, SNICKERS® Extreme and SNICKERS® Peanut Butter Squares! I found them both in the candy area in the grocery section and on the checkout aisles!

nomIt was hard to decide which one to try first, but we went for the SNICKERS® Almond as soon as we got to the car. Mmmm! After I had some in my belly, all was good. My daughter got a treat too since we shared it! SNICKERS® saved the day!

dear-emiThe very next day, I decided to write her my daughter a note and stick it in her lunchbox. Do you ever do that for your kids? I just wanted her to know I was sorry for being “HANGRY” because I still felt a little bad that she had to call me out on my grumpiness. I do feel like I’m not myself when I’m hungry. It’s an easy fix though, just take time to eat and make sure that you don’t get to a point where you’re starving.

hashtagSo who are YOU when you’re hungry? Hopefully you’re not “hangry” like I was because hangry isn’t very pretty!

Be Ready For the Big Game With SNICKERS® Brownie “Hamburger” Cupcakes!

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are 100% my own. #BigGameTreats #CollectiveBias

big-game-treats-2In anticipation of the Big Game, I’ve been planning the menu for our annual Big Game Day party. Our usual spread always includes chips n’ dip, party meatballs, pizza, hot dogs, and hamburgers.  This year I wanted to make some extra yummy treats for the dessert table. We have a few more children that will be coming over this year, so I came up with something I think they’re really going to go nuts over….SNICKERS® Brownie Hamburger Cupcakes! These cupcakes are stuffed with SNICKERS brownie “hamburger patties” and they look just like little hamburgers. There are several steps to making these but they’re also very easy to prepare. My daughter loved helping me make these. They are guaranteed to be the talk of your party!

Here are the ingredients you’ll need to make this fabulous dessert:

  • one box of your favorite brownie mix
  • one box of your favorite yellow cake mix
  • 1 container of white frosting
  • 1/4 cup white sprinkles
  • 1/2 cup coconut flakes, sweetened
  • red, yellow, and green food coloring
  • 15-20 Fun Size SNICKERS, chopped

Preparation

The first thing you want to do is to make the SNICKERS brownies.  I prepare my favorite boxed brownie mix and toss in some chopped up Fun Size Snickers bars into the batter.  Before placing the batter into the baking pan, I place parchment paper in there, so I’m able to easily remove the brownies from the pan after they’re done,  without breaking them. This just makes for better looking squares when you slice them.

After the brownies come out of the oven, be sure to allow them to cool for at least an hour before cutting. I sliced half of the pan into squares and set them aside. I used the remaining half of the brownies to make the “burgers“. Using a small biscuit cutter, cut circles out of the brownies and set aside.

Next, prepare the cupcakes using the yellow cake mix. It’s important that you use cupcake liners when you bake them, so your cupcakes have ridges on the outside. It’s also important to fill your cupcake liners full enough so the cupcakes bake up high.

After baking the cupcakes, allow them to cool completely. After they’ve sufficiently cooled down, remove each one from the wrapper and slice about 1/4 of the bottom of the cupcake off and throw away. (or eat it) Slice the remaining part of each cupcake in half to make the “hamburger bun” and set aside.

To prepare the “lettuce“,  put 1/2 cup of coconut into a bowl and squeeze a few drops of green food coloring into the bowl. Mix together, using a fork, until desired green color is achieved.

making-the-lettuceTo prepare “ketchup“, mix 1/2 container of white frosting into a bowl. Add a few drops of red food coloring and stir together with a spoon until it resembles ketchup.  Do the same to prepare “cheese“, mix 1/2 container of white frosting in a bowl, with a few drops of yellow and some red food coloring too and stir together with a spoon until it resembles cheese. For both of these, you may end up adding drops of color until you reach your desired color.

After you have all of your burger ingredients prepared, it’s time for the fun part…the assembling of your hamburger cupcakes. I like to squeeze some ketchup and cheese, using a pastry bag, on top of the burger and then top with a generous amount of lettuce. When you place the top bun on, it’ll squeeze some of that out and make it look like a real burger. Use the white sprinkles to make the sesame seeds on the bun and poke a cute toothpick through the top! I’m garnishing mine with Starburst® to really get the kids hopping around!

I was able to find all of the items I needed for my recipe at Walmart. I found the Fun Size SNICKERS I used in my recipe on the candy aisle, as well as the Starburst®! It’s the perfect place to buy all of your Big Game Day necessities!
