Summer Is Here! Get to Knott’s! (Yes, It’s That Simple) #NewAtKnotts

Disclosure: The opinions in this article are 100% my own. I do not work for, or with, any brand mentioned in this article, nor do I have any official relationship with them. I have a relationship with GigaSavvy, for whom I create original editorial content.

After reading about all of the new things at Knott’s this summer, I was beyond excited to be attending their Summer Media Day to kick of my summer. I could barely sleep past 5 a.m. that morning! As I sipped my morning coffee in my favorite Peanuts mug, I put together a list of things I wanted to accomplish that day. I think it’s good to set goals, even if they are “Knott’s Goals”, right?

knotts-goals-for-todayWith my need to be matchy-matchy all the time and deep love for the Peanuts gang, I had already purchased the cutest little Snoopy knapsack the day before, along with a box of Peanuts bandages.

snoopy-knapsackSo, I proceeded to pack new my knapsack full of park necessities because I was planning for a marathon of a day. Yeah, I’m a planner AND a packer!

summer-media-dayOne of the most special parts about this particular visit to Knott’s was that I got to spend the day with my dad. I hadn’t been to Knott’s with my dad since I was a little girl! We used to visit every summer and he was the one that took me on my first upside-down rollercoaster there, “Corkscrew”! It’s not there any more but Knott’s holds a special place in my heart and that’s one of the reasons.

how-cute-is-my-dadMy dad knew JUST what I needed when we got through Calico Ghost Town….a grande, nonfat, boysenberry latte WITH whipped cream! Knott’s serves Starbucks. This particular flavor of drink is exclusive to Knott’s and you can grab one of our own at the Gourmet Coffee Hut. In addition to their extensive drink menu, you can also choose from a variety of yummy pastries!

knotts-starbucks-boysenberry-latte

After enjoying our Starbucks, we were ready to take on the latest attraction to open at Knott’s: Voyage to the Iron Reef! This brand new attraction opened on May 15 and I was dying to go on it since I’d heard it’s really cool.

knotts-iron-reef Voyage to the Iron Reef is a 4-D interactive adventure that has you taking on The Kraken Queen and her aquatic army, all while wearing 3-D glasses and going head-to-head with your friends for the highest score!

It was a REALLY cool experience and we kept getting back into line because we were on a quest to beat our previous high scores. When you exit, you can see your scores. I don’t mean to brag but check out my score from my first time!

my-first-timeNext, we were ready to preview the all-new Blockbuster Beagle…on Ice! What a treat, considering I usually only see Snoopy on Ice shows during Knott’s Merry Farm! If you’ve never seen any of the Snoopy on Ice shows in the Charles M. Schultz Theatre, not only are they adorable, but the skaters are incredibly talented!

blockbuster-beagleIn this new production, Snoopy and his Peanuts buddies “go Hollywood“, bringing Walk of Fame glamour, dazzling movie lot escapades, and California excitement to a brand new ice show adventure.

pairI enjoyed the show immensely. The music is so good and there is so much going on the entire time. I need to go back to watch it a couple more times because it’s just that good!

kbf_goldpass_2015_NewPass (1)

This is where a Knott’s Season Pass comes in handy! With this much stuff to see and do at Knott’s. you can keep going back when you have a Season Pass because there are no blockout dates. With Knott’s Soak City open, a Gold Pass is even more ideal. Unlimited visits to Knott’s AND entry to Soak City? Yes, please!

vertical-impactAnother cool show I got to watch for the first time was Vertical Impact! I squeezed myself into the middle of the anxious crowd in Calico Square, who were all waiting to watch this ultimate blend of extreme stunts with high flying acrobats performing a one-of-a-kind performance. This high energy show is set to the most popular songs of today, combining everything from trampoline stunts, BMX, skaters, dancers, and aerialists.

I think my mouth kept dropping open watching the amazing performers!

There are so many things to do at Knott’s this summer! Fun on all of the rides, yummy food to eat, and  TONS of shows to see, too! Summer nights at Knott’s are one of my favorite parts about summer, especially when they’re spent with friends!

CHOC Children’s Plans to Address Pediatric Mental Health Crisis in the Community and Kicks Off With a $5 Million Gift

When I saw the announcement from CHOC Children’s about their plans to address pediatric mental health issues by offering extensive services to children, it really touched my heart. Community leaders and executives from CHOC Children’s recently announced a transformative initiative to ensure children and adolescents with mental illness receive the health care services and support they currently lack in Orange County’s fragmented system of care. As a teacher in Orange County, I have seen SO many children, over the years, in need of these kinds of services, but very limited resources available for their families to turn to. Now I feel like there will be more hope for them.

1in5Did you know that 1 in 5 children experience a diagnosable mental health condition during childhood? There are about 150,000 children in Orange County alone who fall into this group and yet, there are no psychiatric inpatient beds for patients under 12 years in Orange County. Due to the absence of designated space to treat young patients, sometimes children with serious mental health episodes remain in the emergency department for days at a time. In addition, there aren’t enough inpatient psychiatric beds for adolescents either, with many needing to be hospitalized outside of Orange County.

generally-speaking There’s a stigma about mental illness and people usually associate it mostly with adults and perhaps young adults or teens, but rarely do they think of it as something younger children need help and care with. Community leaders and executives from CHOC Children’s recently announced a transformative initiative to ensure children and adolescents with mental illness receive the health care services and support they currently lack in Orange County’s fragmented system of care.

CHOCChildren’s advocate Sandy Segerstrom Daniels, managing partner, C.J. Segerstrom & Sons, donated a $5 million lead gift to help establish CHOC Children’s Mental Health Inpatient Center. The new center will provide a safe, nurturing place for children ages 3 to 18 to receive care for mental health conditions. It will also provide specialty programming for children ages 11 and younger.

The new CHOC Children’s Mental Health Inpatient Center will be located on the third floor of CHOC’s Research Building and will feature:

    • 18 beds in a secure, healing environment
    • Outdoor area for recreation
    • Specially trained pediatric staff

Construction is expected to begin by fall 2015 and finish in late 2017. CHOC has launched a fundraising campaign to raise $11 million for inpatient capital and startup costs, and $16 million to endow the program.

a-comprehensive-systemRecognizing the urgency to help meet the community’s need, last fall CHOC and Rick and Kay Warren, co-founders of Saddleback Church formed a taskforce — led by Dr. Maria Minon, CHOC chief medical officer, and Dr. Heather Huszti, CHOC chief psychologist, and comprised of community leaders, educators and faith-based advisors — to begin discussing a comprehensive pediatric system of care for patients with mental illness.

CHOC’s support of the pediatric system of care includes:

    • expanding mental health services this year for CHOC patients being treated for serious/chronic illnesses (these children are more likely to have mental health problems, such as depression and severe anxiety, than their healthier peers)
    • opening an intensive outpatient program in 2016 to keep struggling children out of the hospital and assist those who have been released
    • expanding CHOC’s outpatient eating disorders program by 2016;
and continuing to facilitate and work on multiple county-wide projects with the task force.

CHOC is raising additional funds for outpatient mental health services. To learn more about CHOC’s mental health campaign and how YOU can help support it, click here.

Summertime is my favorite time of year! Through enchanting underwater forests, disorienting ocean current tunnels, and mysterious mechanical wreckage, high definition 3-D animation will surround guests at every turn.

Take a look at the action inside the Iron Reef:
Not only am I am anxious to get to Knott’s this summer to go on my own Voyage to the Iron Reef™, but there are also 2 new exciting shows to see! I love the shows at Knott’s!  The first new show features some of my childhood favorites, The Peanuts Gang. Watch Snoopy and his friends appear in the newest production to hit the Charles M. lets-stop-and-chatIn addition to these 2 brand-new shows at Knott’s this summer, there’s a TON of other entertainment going on at the park this summer too. You’re going to want to come back to Knott’s (and Knott’s Soak City Water Park) a bunch of times! Especially during the summertime!

Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour For Birthday Celebrations: A Family Tradition Passed Down From My Own Childhood

farrells-squareI have very fond memories of visiting Farrell’s as a child with my family. It was mostly on special occasions like mine or my brother’s birthdays, but we did get to go there on other occasions as well! Going to Farrell’s for our birthdays was something we’d look forward to every year.  It was the original Farrell’s children’s menu that’s responsible for my love of Peanut Butter and Banana sandwiches! Yep, the original Farrell’s had them on the kids menu and they were my fav! (I wish we had digital cameras back then so I would have pictures of it all to post now!)

all-about-the-stacheOver the past few decades, Farrell’s has gone through some restructuring. At one point, they only had one location anywhere near me. Imagine my excitement when I started to hear about new locations opening up in California over the past few years! I hopped on the chance to be able to create an annual Farrell’s birthday tradition with my own daughter that was similar to what I enjoyed doing as a little girl. Did I mention we have a Farrell’s location within 5 minutes of our home? How lucky is that?

farrells-sticker

our-farrellsAfter having a super 9th birthday celebration at our local Farrell’s last year, my daughter couldn’t wait to get there again this year for her 10th birthday celebration! I don’t think we ever get tired of the ambiance in there.

junior-zookeepers-menuThe kids keep pretty busy with the fun Junior Zookeepers menu. Even at 10 years old, they’re still into it. The offerings on their menu are items that they actually enjoy and want to order. They’re also generous portions. Nothing beats a good old-fashioned grilled cheese!

grilled-cheeseDid you know that Farrell’s offers gluten-free options for guests and also has a nut allergy menu? I think that’s really important. It allows guests who might not be able to dine out of their own home normally, because of food allergies, to have options and the freedom to eat out in a restaurant without worrying. Not only does Farrell’s have these menus, their servers are educated about the different items and know the menus really well.

farrells-gluten-free-menu-options

farrells-nut-allergy-optionsThe kids always find it necessary to request an extra plate of pickles from our server to munch on. It’s all about the pickle for them! Bob Farrell’s Motto is “Give Them The Pickle and They’ll Come Back!” Well I know it keeps us coming back! That’s for sure!

pickle-buttonAlthough I love the food at Farrell’s, we all know that the BEST part comes last….the dessert! Their dessert menu can be overwhelming (in a good way) to look at because there are so many different sundaes to choose from. It just means that you need to go back and try different sundaes on other occasions! For my daughter’s birthday, we decided to ring in “double digits” properly….with The World Famous Farrell’s ZOO! This was in addition to the complimentary birthday sundae they already bring you!

zoo-and-sundaeIf you have never heard of The World Famous Farrell’s Zoo, pay attention to this because it’s a must-try for any and all Farrell’s go-ers!  It’s made up of 4 scoops of their famous ice cream, 3 fruit flavor sherbets, 4 delicious toppings, whipped cream, cherries, and bananas! Oh and I forgot to mention the animals! (Hence the name “Zoo”!)  Not only is it a ridonkulous sight too see but the crew at Farrell’s makes it an extra big deal by ringing the fire station siren to grab your attention when it’s time to deliver it to a table.

here-comes-the-zoo

zooThis concoction is so huge that it takes 2 servers to deliver it to your table and they bring it out on a stretcher! It’s quite the way to celebrate and sure made my birthday girl feel like the center of attention! After all of the hoopla and the birthday song of Farrell’s choice, the server will help dish out the zoo to all of the guests. It’s beyond yummy in the tummy. My daughter chose to set all of the animals aside to take home with us.

zoo-animalsWe had the best time celebrating my daughter’s 10th birthday at Farrell’s and want to send a special thank you to our server Brooke, who really helped make it a special night! We’d also like to thank Chad and Steven who are always accommodating during our frequent visits to Farrell’s!

thank-you-brookeIt looks like my daughter has started a new collection of her yearly birthday stickers from Farrell’s on the inside of her closet! Well, until next year…..

When a Cast Member Makes a Magical First Impression on You! Meet One of My Favorites: Ronna From Disney’s Yacht Club! #DisneySMMC

They say that first impressions are everything and I completely agree with that statement. You never truly get a chance to re-do a first impression. This is especially true in businesses such as restaurants, stores, and hotels. When a guest walks into an establishment for some type of service,  they start to form an opinion about that place of business based on the way they were treated by the first person they encountered who was working there.

first-impressions-are-everythingMy family and I recently took our first trip to Walt Disney World Resort for the 2015 Disney Social Media Moms Celebration. We were so excited to be all booked at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort during our trip! After taking the red-eye from Southern California to Orlando, Florida, we finally arrived at our destination around 6:30 a.m. on a very minimal amount of sleep. I may, or may not, have entered the lobby of Disney’s Yacht Club while sleep walking. As I entered the check-in line, I was immediately greeted at the front desk by one of the sweetest cast members in the place! Talk about making a lasting first impression! Even as I sit here writing this post, I miss that sweet lady.

disneys-yacht-club-resortHer name was Ronna and she was just beginning her shift that day. As I glanced over the counter, into her work area, I noticed she had a few personal items, such as pens and a paper pad, that were purple! I love purple! I didn’t even need to ask if purple was her favorite color because it was so obvious.

how-fun-are-her-purple-accessoriesMy asking her immediately sparked such a pleasant conversation between us, as she proceeded to check me (and my family that was sleeping on a couch in the hotel lobby at that moment) into our room. I also noticed that Ronna was from Chicago, specifically from the same area that I have family. Again, we hit it off talking about Chicago.

look-for-ronnaI appreciated how much time Ronna took to thoroughly explain everything I needed to know about the hotel to me. There was a lot to take in and get to know about this giant resort hotel, as well as the parks. I could see why Disney had hired Ronna to work for them…because she’s a magical person who makes magic for guests….which is exactly what a cast member is supposed to do!

meet-cast-member-RonnaFor the duration of our stay, I kept checking the front desk, each time we’d walk by, to see if Ronna was working. I finally learned that she also works next door at the front desk at Disney’s Beach Club  Resort (it’s an adjacent property to the Yacht Club). On our last day, just before leaving on The Magical Express for the airport, we finally found her working again. I re-introduced myself (but of course she remembered me) and told her that I wanted to thank her again for being so kind. I think she was a little surprised that I came back to tell her that.

we-heart-ronnaThen I asked if we could take a picture together and if I could also photograph her alone. I think she almost cried happy tears from my request, which made me also get happy tears in my eyes! As you can see from the pictures, Ronna is absolutely adorable and I hope we get to go back there someday soon and visit her when we do! She was our first impression of the Walt Disney World Resort and I’d have to say that she made a magical one.

Have YOU had any magical experiences with Disney Cast Members before? If so, where were you and how did they make an impression on you?
