Teacher Wellness Is Essential For A Successful School Year

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Kaiser Permanente Orange County. All opinions are 100% my own. Always seek medical advice from a medical professional.

My school year is well underway and so far (knock on wood), I’ve been lucky enough to escape any illnesses this year. I did start to get a sore throat at the beginning of the year, but that always seems to happen when you go from summer break to teaching and talking so loudly for 6+ hours a day.my-first-graders-are-adorableI absolutely adore my 31 first graders this year! They are the cutest bunch of kids and are so sweet and eager to learn every single day. They also like to give me tons of hugs and even share their snacks with meteacher-for-you.It’s a sweet gesture when one of them hands me a snack and I’d never want to crush their spirit so I kindly thank them…and dispose of it properly when they walk away. teachers-dont-have-time-to-get-sickIt’s extra important to be on top of your health when you’re a teacher because if you’re sick and have to be out of the classroom, it affects everything. (We all know what can happen when there’s a sub.) I’m very fortunate to be a “seasoned” teacher because a brand new teacher is likely to get sick more often, suffering from up to 2 colds per month. I remember those days!cold-and-flu-season-is-almost-hereWith cold and flu season upon us, I set up an appointment with Kaiser Permanente Orange County Physician Dr. Eric Troyan to chat and get his his best advice for keeping healthy in the classroom. He had some great tips and advice for me, which could be valuable information for anyone who has prolonged contact with children on a daily basis and works in a school or daycare like me. illness-prevention-tipsHere are some of the great illness prevention tips we talked about:
Hand Washing and Sanitation
Washing your hands as much as possible is actually the #1 scientifically proven way to stay healthy. In the case of teachers, if a teacher comes in contact with a child and then touches their own face, it’s an instant transfer of germs. Always wash your hands before you touch your face. In my own classroom,I don’t have access to a sink so I keep a big container of alcohol-based hand sanitizer nearby. It’s not a substitute for hand washing ,but does get me by until recess, lunch, or after school, when I can access a real sink. When you do wash your hands, it’s recommended that you use soap and warm water and lather for at least 20 seconds. (I recommend signing the ABCs to know that you’ve lathered for long enough.)lots-of-handwashingKeep Your Immune System Optimized
Your immune system is everything when it comes to illness and preventing and avoiding illness. The stronger your immune system is, the less often you’ll get sick and quicker you’ll recover. Sleep, Nutrition, and Hydration can all affect your immune system.

  • Get Ample Sleep – You should try to maintain a regular sleep schedule of at least 10 hours a night. If you get less than 8-10 hours of sleep, your immune system is more likely to take a hit. Studies show a correlation between sleep deprived people and illness. recommended-sleep
  • Nutrition – Your body depends on proper nutrition to stabilize your immune system. Eating the recommended daily servings of fruit and vegetables is very important. Vitamins in the foods you’re eating are ones that your body uses most efficiently. However, we can’t always eat a balanced diet and get every vitamin we need so supplementing your diet with things like Vitamin C and Vitamin B Complex is a great idea, too. make-smart-food-choices
  • Hydration – It’s always important to stay hydrated but doing so can also help you avoid getting sick. Everyone should be drinking about 64 oz. of water on a daily basis but increasing it to about 12 glasses per day (or 96 oz.) is ideal when you’re starting to feel under the weather. Hydration is important overall and helps with many things, not just avoiding illness.teacher-wellness-drink-your-water

Get a Flu Vaccine
It’s important to actively take care of yourself so you can avoid illnesses, especially when cold and flu season rolls around. One of the things that Dr. Troyan  highly recommended was to get a flu shot. get-your-flu-shotHe really stressed the importance of this one for people like me who are around children. He also explained that the flu vaccine this year will be more effective than the one last year and told me that it’s considered a “killed version” vaccine as opposed to a live one, which you would hear about people actually getting sick after receiving it. The best time to get a flu vaccine is before Halloween but if you don’t do it by then, you’ll definitely want to get yours before Thanksgiving! Flu season tends to peak after the New Year in California, so why not go into it well prepared to fight it off?teacher-wellness-is-essential-for-a-successful-school-yearTeacher wellness is essential when it comes to a successful school year. Do you or someone close to you work with children? What kinds of things do you do to help fight off illness during the school year?

“snowcar” that greets guests on the road to Radiator Springs. Each address along Route 66–from Flo’s V-8 Café to Luigi’s Casa della Tires–features holiday décor that reflects the personality of the “Cars” character who lives there.
  • “a bug’s land” transforms for the holidays, too, as Flik and his bug friends deck their land with oversized lights and ornaments.
  • A dazzling, 50-foot Christmas tree adorns Carthay Circle, drawing guests into the
holiday magic along Buena Vista Street. The tree and surrounding buildings, inspired by Los Angeles as it appeared when Walt Disney arrived in the 1920s, create scenes of another era with vintage-style decor. disney-holidays-family-tree-photo

  • Twinkling lights, festive holiday garland and nearly 1,800 ornaments decorate the
soaring Christmas tree in Town Square, Main Street, U.S.A., an ideal place for guests to begin their holiday traditions. The Christmas tree becomes an enchanting place for guests to take their holiday photos, up close or with all 60 feet of the shimmering tree.
  • On Friday, Nov. 18, guests and cast members in Disneyland will celebrate the birthday of Mickey Mouse, applauding him as he appears in a special birthday cavalcade preceding “A Christmas Fantasy” parade.

Disneyland guests definitely will want to experience the popular seasonal transformations of the following park attractions:

Disneyland Resort join in the holiday festivities with twinkling lights and ornaments, holiday

5 Reasons You NEED to See DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls

I don’t even know where to begin with DreamWorks Animations’s Trolls! I watched the trailer a few dozen times when it was released, and have been giddy about ever since! family-trolls-pictureWhen I received a very special opportunity to attend an advanced screening and a press junket with some of the cast of Trolls, I walked around asking my friends to pinch me! I think my family was equally excited to see it early! Can you tell we’re big movie fans in our home?

Have you watched the trailer yet?

happiest-story-everThe Story of Trolls
In my opinion, Trolls is like the happiest story about happiness there ever was! It’s from the creators of Shrek and is a clever, adorable, hilarious family film about the search for happiness and just how far some will go to get it. trolls-flannel-rainbowHere’s a synopsis:
This hilarious film transports audiences to a colorful, wondrous world populated by the overly optimistic Trolls, who have a constant dance in their step and a song on their lips, and the comically pessimistic Bergens, who are only happy when they have trolls in their stomachs.
After the Bergens invade Troll Village, Poppy (Kendrick), the happiest Troll ever born, and the overly-cautious curmudgeonly Branch (Timberlake) set off on a journey to rescue her friends. Together, this mismatched duo embarks on a rescue mission full of adventure and mishaps – trying to tolerate each other long enough to get the job done.trolls-treeOnce I screened Trolls, I found that I’d completely fallen in love with it! By the time I walked out of the theater, I felt so happy, colorful, invincible, empowered, and positive. Part of my empowerment may have come from the adorable Trolls wigs they gave us! blue-trolls-wig5-reasons-you-need-to-see-trolls1. It features an all-star cast.
I will fully admit it’s a little difficult to speak calmly about the cast when it features JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE and ANNA KENDRICK! Can it get any better than that? Trolls also stars Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Russell Brand, Zooey Deschanel, Jeffrey Tambor, Christine Baranski, James Corden, Kunal Nayyar, Ron Funches, Icona Pop, Quvenzhané Wallis along with John Cleese and Gwen Stefani! trolls-group-shotAnd did I already mention that I got to meet Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick?

2) It’s SO beautifully done.
From start to finish, there’s just no detail left behind in Trolls. The colors and animation will wow you, the story will warm your heart, and the music might just have you up and dancing in the theater, although that will only last for a few seconds once your 11 year old daughter orders you to sit down and stop embarrassing her! (I may be speaking from experience here.) I think I was as enamored by the art and scrapbooking effects in the film as I was by the actual animation. (This will make more sense once you’ve seen Trolls.)trolls-felt3) The music
The music in Trolls is amazing! With the soundtrack produced by Justin Timberlake you already know how good it is!  The soundtrack features five original songs including songs by Justin Timberlake, Ariana Grande, Anna Kendrick and Gwen Stefani, in addition to a number of classic hits from the ‘60s through the ‘80s. There are songs that any theater goer can sing to and it’s fun to watch the youngest generation singing songs from way back when. We were so inspired by the music, specifically Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling”, that we made our very own family musical.ly to it, right outside the theater! Take a look!

The Trolls soundtrack is a must-have! I received a copy of it on CD at the press junket, but I also purchased the entire thing on iTunes! trolls-soundtrack4) Princess Poppy
She might be small but she’s mighty! Poppy (Anna Kendrick) is the most happy-go-lucky, positive Troll around. I love how big her heart is and how infectious her attitude is around the other Trolls, especially Branch (Justin Timberlake). She is everything we should want for our own daughters to be. She is the perfect princess without the stereotypical perfect princess look and shape. Most of all, I love that she believes everyone deserves to be happy! (because they do!)

poppy-felt

everyone-deserves-to-be-happy

5) Trolls is EXACTLY what our world needs right now!
My most favorite reason for recommending Trolls to everyone is because it is exactly the kind of thing our world needs right now! I don’t like to get political, so I won’t go there, but it’s no secret that every time you turn on the TV right now, nothing good comes of it! Whether it’s relating to the election or it’s hearing about and/or seeing all of the violence happening in the world, none of it is pleasant. 2016 has been a tough time for a lot of people (including me) and even if it’s just for a couple of hours, Trolls is the kind of film that will take you directly to your “happy place”! Who couldn’t use a little bit of that right now, right?

trolls-poster-newI don’t believe in posting spoilers or any sort of details that will ruin it for someone who has yet to see a film, so don’t worry, nothing I’ve written will spoil any of it for you! I can honestly say that Trolls is appropriate for all ages and will definitely keep anyone from young child to senior citizen engaged and interested! DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls is in theaters November 4th! Please come back and tell me how much you loved it, ok?

Do YOU Know The Switch Witch? (She’s EVERY Parent’s BFF at Halloween)

Let me start by saying that I don’t do anything scary, especially at Halloween time. I don’t think it’s fun to scare my daughter or other children around me. With that being said, let’s talk about The Switch Witch because it’s Halloween time and you’re going to need her to come and save you! its-halloween-timeDon’t worry, The Switch Witch is a friendly witch and she will make your life so much easier. This time of year, kids everywhere are gathering way too much candy for their own good. Whether they’ve gone to Halloween parties or received goody bags from school, it’s all more candy than they should be eating. As soon as Halloween night hits, your home is going to be overthrown by even more sweet treats! lets-talk-about-the-switch-witchThe story of The Switch Witch is a fun, friendly one and a game changer for parents everywhere who are looking to get rid of their kid’s Halloween candy! It’s important to know that she is a friendly witch and a friend of The Tooth Fairy, Santa, and The Easter Bunny, so that’s how I first explained her to my daughter. She only visits during the first few nights after Halloween (including Halloween night). Halloween-treats-candyKids get to pick out 10 pieces of candy and put them away somewhere safe. Then, they leave the rest of their candy out for The Switch Witch before they go to sleep. (Some kids even write her a nice note!) Later that night, when everyone is sleeping, The Switch Witch will come in and “switch” out their candy for a surprise!the-switch-witch-brings When kids wake up the next morning, they get so excited to see what she left them! We’ve done this for every year that my daughter can remember and it really saves what could be looked at as a lot of unwanted sugary treats from being ingested by your kids. Your pediatrician and your dentist will be so pleased with you! Happy Halloween! we-love-the-switch-witch

Nutritional Tips to Help Minimize Migraines

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Kaiser Permanente Orange County. All opinions are 100% my own. Always seek medical advice from a medical professional.

I’m a busy mom. I have no time to waste being sick but when I get a migraine, it literally ruins the entire day. Do you ever deal with migraines? They’re the worst! migraines-are-the-worstWhat starts off as a headache just seems to escalate and get so intense that my head feels like it’s going to pop off! The pain can get so bad that I need to go lay down in a dark room to sleep it off, which usually means sleeping until the next morning. Even worse are those migraines that last more than one day.prevention-and-wellnessI decided to set up an appointment to meet with a Kaiser Permanente Orange County Clinical Dietician. I wanted to chat in person and talk about my own experiences with migraines, what I’m eating, and if there’s anything I can alter in my diet to help minimize my migraines? I’ve had a few friends mention certain foods being related to the cause of migraines,so that was one of the things I wanted to inquire about. I also wanted to ask for other tips to help minimize the frequency of my migraines. I was anxious for my appointment with Natalie Lloyd, R.D., who’s a Clinical Dietitian from Kaiser Nutritional Services. kp-all-under-one-roofThe first thing I learned was about 90% of migraine sufferers have a family history of migraines, which means, if your parent has migraines, you’re pretty much guaranteed to experience them also. My mom does get them, so that was discouraging news, however, there are still things I can do to combat that statistic. I’m not giving up hope.genetics-matterSome other factors that can be related to migraines include lack of sleep, dehydration, hormones, and stress. Well, I fall into every one of those categories, too. its-time-to-get-pro-activeI decided that it was time to make some big changes and get more pro-active in my efforts to do things to counter what could be making me get migraines. eat-more-fruitDuring my appointment with the Clinical Dietitian, I learned that there’s no actual evidence that’s been found to link any certain food as the actual cause of a migraine. So weird because I swear there are foods that set mine off. We discussed this further though and although there isn’t actual evidence to support that, there are certain foods and ingredients used in foods (and some drinks) that can be avoided to help minimize migraines.
Here are just some of the foods to avoid:

  • anything fermented
  • canned foods
  • processed, aged cheeses
  • overripe tomatoes and avocados
  • heavily processed foods
  • caffeine – This is actually a tricky one. Sometimes people who drink caffeine regularly haven’t had enough caffeine which may cause a migraine, while others have had too much.
  • aspartame – This chemical can be found in several diet drinks and other beverages that claim to be low-cal or sugar free. It’s just bad overall and should be avoided. *Tip: Try drinking sparkling water.
  • alcohol and wine – Although many people talk about the sulfites in wine as being a problem, tannins are also something that can be a culprit of a migraine after consumption. Both sulfites and tannins should be avoided.

Some of my favorite things to snack on are actually on the list to try to avoid. The good news is that I was told that I didn’t need to completely eliminate these foods altogether, just to cut back on them significantly. Basically, just enjoy them every now and then and not on a daily basis.everything-in-moderationThe Clinical Dietitian also gave me some great general nutrition tips to follow as well. I feel like her tips were great for maintaining overall wellness, which is something that Kaiser Permanente Orange County strives to teach all of its patients and staff. It’s really more of a general guide to daily living, that could easily keep you on track and I feel like it’s really helpful. She also suggested keeping a food journal or food log, especially if you’re attempting to eliminate certain foods to see how your body reacts.
Take a look at the general tips I got: general-daily-recommendationsI learned so much at my appointment with the nutritionist. Although there’s no cure and nothing will completely eliminate my migraines, it’s been a big help to be more educated about some of the things to avoid. Since my appointment, and after making some changes in my diet and regimen, I feel a lot better and have experienced far fewer migraines lately.

Do you have issues with migraines? If you do, I highly recommend seeking professional advice from your own doctor.

How I Achieved Better Balance in My Life

This post was sponsored by Nature Made® as a part of an Ambassador Program for Influence Central. All opinions are 100% my own.

Lately, I’ve been focusing a lot more on my health and trying to do things to take better care of myself. Over the past few years, I gotten into the habit of putting putting myself, and my own needs, last. Perhaps that just happens sometimes when you’re a mom? I was starting to feel so sluggish, I felt the energy level of a lazy cat that just sleeps all day long.achieving-balanceI made the decision to take a few steps to turn it around and honestly, just making those few changes to my daily diet and regimen, has me feeling better already. I’ve had a few friends ask me what I’ve been doing differently, which makes me happy because it makes me realize that others can see a difference. I’m always open to sharing my secrets and what works for me, so here you go. 5-things-i-didI started keeping a journal.
Keeping a daily journal was a great way to hold myself accountable. Since I was implementing a few changes in my life, writing everything down in one place seemed far easier to stay organized and keep track. There’s just something about knowing you have to write it all down that keeps you going. It also allows you to look back on previous days and see how well you’ve done and leaves you with a sense of accomplishment. How cute is my journal? It says “I’m doing me right now!” Seemed appropriate enough. i-started-keeping-a-journalI started drinking more water.
For some reason, drinking enough water is one of my downfalls, meaning I rarely do it. I have no problem carrying a water bottle around with  me all day, but somehow my bottle stays full. I had to make a conscious effort to keep track of my water intake and make sure it was at least 64 oz. a day. It really helps if you have a cute cup (like this one) to drink your water from. drink-more-waterI chose healthier snacks and foods.
I think part of my problem was a combination of being a busy mom and not eating when I should eat. That only backfired because when I did eat, I would choose things that weren’t the healthiest. I was basically snacking a majority of the day and grabbing not-so-healthy snacks. Making a conscious effort to plan out healthier snacks and foods was a game changer. I added more fruits and veggies throughout my day, as snacks and side dishes for my meals, and I felt a lot more energetic after just a couple of weeks. This is one of my favorite salads to make, too. healthier-snacksI took myself out for a daily walk.
Like most people, I’m busy. I feel like I never stop moving all day long. However, I also don’t stop and take any time for myself during my busy days. I made the conscious effort to take a break each day, from whatever I had going on, to take myself out for a 30 minute walk. I know that sounds kind of funny but for me, there were two benefits to it. First of all, it was a chance to clear my head and decompress. Just being outside in nature is so relaxing and calms me down. Second, we’re supposed to be walking, or doing some form of exercise each day. It was a win-win for me. drop-everything-and-go-for-a-walkI added Nature Made® Probiotics to my day.
